From a bird’s eye view, the city is a patchwork of farms, ranches, wineries and vineyards, with residential developments and commercial centers here and there. Aside from being an award-winning wine producer, Livermore is also a leading research city, with two science and tech centers located within its boundaries.

History

Livermore was once part of Rancho Las Positas, a 48,000-acre land grant awarded to Jose Noriega and Robert Livermore in 1839. A British citizen, Livermore became a Mexican Catholic and eventually raised a family in the area. His ranch, where he dabbled in cattle, horses, and horticulture, became a stop-over for travelers heading to Sacramento.

When Livermore died in 1858, his friend William Mendenhall took over. Mendenhall established the ranch as a city in 1869 and named it after him. It was then officially incorporated in 1876 and is considered the oldest city in the Livermore Valley region.

Because of Livermore’s mild Mediterranean climate and gravelly soil, residents started to experiment with viticulture. It proved to be a successful and profitable venture, with the city already boasting a couple of wineries and vineyards by the 1880s. Today, Livermore is both wine country and tech city, with a revitalized downtown and fantastic real estate to offer.
