History

Diablo used to be ranchland, much of which was owned by a fellow named William Cameron, a notable figure after the Gold Rush. Cameron was the man behind the Mt. Diablo Summit Road Company and the Green Valley. In the late 19th century, the area underwent several name changes, one of which was Oakwood Park Stock Farm. The land remained largely agricultural, producing orchard fruits, wheat, hay, and so on.

It was in the early 20th century that the area was transformed into an upscale resort destination by Robert Noble Burgess. Eventually, the sprawling development was named Mount Diablo Park Club, known today as Diablo Country Club. It is widely recognized as one of the first country clubs in California, and its beauty and exclusivity have been attracting San Francisco’s elite for generations.
