Blackhawk

Blackhawk is an affluent and unincorporated master-planned community located in Contra Costa County’s San Ramon Valley area, in the East Bay region. Occupying a total area of roughly 6 square miles, the town is divided into several distinct communities, with Blackhawk Country Club being its most prominent neighborhood. Blackhawk is widely regarded as one of the most upscale communities in San Ramon Valley.

Bounded by Diablo and Tassajara, Blackhawk is a short drive from the Alamo-Danville area. A portion of the community is located in the foothills of the Diablo mountain range, with Mount Diablo situated further north from Blackhawk. The large expanse of the Morgan Territory Regional Preserve is also accessible from the town.

According to the most recent census, Blackhawk is home to about 11,000 residents. Its seclusion, luxurious lifestyle, and proximity to nature make it a top choice for notable personalities from the media, sports, and music industries.

History

Before Blackhawk, there was Blackhawk Ranch, which was established in 1917 by the Easton family. Its location made it a perfect breeding place for thoroughbred horses. Incidentally, Blackhawk’s name was derived from an Irish racehorse owned by the family. Blackhawk Ranch was later owned by several people, until ownership landed on Howard Peterson of Peterson Tractor.

Blackhawk’s transformation into the upscale community it is known today started in 1975 when Ken Behring and the Blackhawk Development Corporation took over the land’s ownership.

The original plans intended the creation of over 4000 home sites, but due to criticism, projected negative impact on the environment, and objections from local residents and environmentalists, this was reduced to 2,400 homes. The corporation also gave approximately 2,000 acres of the land to become a part of the Mount Diablo State Park.
